What is RSS?
RSS (Really Simple Syndication) enables automatic collection of the latest news and information from frequently updated websites. By subscribing to an Asset Auctions RSS feed, you will receive our latest auction information delivered right to your computer without even visiting the Asset Auctions website. Additionally, you can subscribe to RSS feeds from a variety of other websites. Types of websites that commonly offer RSS feeds include blogs, news, weather, sports, entertainment, and social networking sites, among others. Think of RSS as a way to collect all the news and information that is important to you in one place.
How do I collect and read RSS feeds?
RSS feeds are collected and read with a program known as a feed reader (also known as a news aggregator). These programs can either be web-based applications or stand-alone programs that are downloadable. Any of the feed readers listed below will enable you to view RSS feeds. Browse through these links and select a feed reader:
Web-based feed readers
- Google Reader
- Bloglines
- NewsGator Online
- Additionally, many current browsers, including Mozilla Firefox and Internet Explorer 7, allow feeds to be added directly to the browser.
Customizable homepages that support RSS feeds
Downloadable feed readers
Once you have selected a feed reader, the are two main ways to add RSS feeds to the reader. You can add RSS feeds directly to the reader or you can navigate to the feed and add it to select feed readers. A brief summary of how to do each is outlined in the following section.
Add RSS feeds directly to the feed reader
Open the feed reader and find the option to add new feeds. The location will vary based on the feed reader, so screenshots are provided below that show how to add feeds to Feedreader and Google Reader. You will then be presented with a dialogue box to enter a URL into. Copy and paste in the following URL for the "Industrial Auctions" feed:http://www.asset-auctions.com/xml/cal.xml
Copy and paste in the following URL for the "Government and Surplus Auctions" feed:
http://www.asset-auctions.com/xml/cal2.xml
